Have a Winning Winter Season With These Cold-Weather Sports Safety Tips

Winter is a special time for kids and kids-at-heart. My kids grew up in Texas and most winters, they didn’t have the chance to experience the beauty and inspiration that comes with the first snow of the season.

Now that we’re in the Washington, D.C., area and the first flakes have fallen, I’m figuring out how I can introduce my kids to all the different ways they can have fun in the snow, including skiing, snowboarding, ice skating and more. They’re already experts in making snowmen, which they would do every day if they could.

Of course, as a mother of three active kids, I know bumps and bruises are bound to happen – my kids love to try new things and push their limits – but there are ways to prevent the more serious injuries that don’t have to happen.

In 2013, more than 47,000 children were treated in emergency departments for injuries related to sledding, ice skating and snowboarding, and the vast majority of these injuries were preventable.

Here are a few tips I’ll be using to keep my kids active, healthy and safe during the winter months.

These are just a few ideas to keep your kids playing the cold-weather sports they love through the whole wonderful winter season.
